The Divided States of America
A short essay on the state of our country

Yesterday was a day for the history books. For many reasons. I won’t go into my own political leanings, because I really just don’t have any anymore. None of it even matters anymore.
The last year has caused so much division in our nation. We have been played. Creating division is only for the benefit of those who want to destroy us. And we are falling right into their plans.
The media feeds us and we eat it up. We hear the narrative and we decide which side we fall on. Then we only can find truth and understanding in the side with which we agree.
The problem is not what others want to do or what they are doing. The problem is us. Not only that we are falling into the division and madness, but that we have stopped looking at each other as humans.
Yesterday a woman who was in the capital building and I won’t go into the details of how or why people were in there, it is not important. I saw people on social media literally destroy her name. She was accused of so much evil. And on top of all that there was absolute callousness at the death of this woman.
This is a woman who had a family. She had fought for our nation. She had people in her life who cared about her. They found out by watching the news, the most callous way a person could find out their mother or wife was killed.
The same has happened with BLM movement and people who have been killed by police. People start commenting about the person’s history and life before that moment. As if their life doesn’t matter and their death is trivial simply because they believe differently than you do.
I will never understand a nation that places the importance on sameness over the value of human life. Maybe it is the social media society we live in. Maybe it is the quarantine. Maybe the stress from the things that have happened this year. I don’t know. But what I do know is that we have to find a way to connect again.
Until we start to see each other as humans first and then separate our differences from that, there is no hope for this country. We must start to connect to each other again in a human way.
